Before the National Hockey League, there was the National Hockey Association. Disputes caused this league to end and transformed it in to the NHL. The Great Depression and the second World War reduced the league to 6 teams in 1942. These 6 teams are know as the "Original Six". These 6 teams are shown above, they are (from left to right): the Montreal Canadiens, The New York Rangers, The Chicago Blackhawks, The Boston Bruins, The Detroit Red Wings, and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
